How to use this calculator
Enter a weight and choose grams, kilograms, ounces or pounds. Use it for malt, hops, sugars, salts and equipment quantities when a supplier or recipe uses another unit system.
For small hop and salt additions, weighing on a suitable scale is more reliable than converting a rounded spoon measure. Keep the unit visible when copying the result into a recipe.
How the calculation works
The converter uses grams as its intermediate unit: kilograms are 1000 g, ounces are 28.3495 g and pounds are 453.592 g. It does not change ingredient density, moisture, packaging or brewing potential.
Example calculation
500 g of malt converts to 0.5 kg, 17.637 oz and 1.102 lb approximately. Round to a practical scale resolution when weighing the ingredient.
Understanding the result
Weight conversion protects recipe accuracy when ingredient data and your scale use different conventions. It is particularly useful for hops, salts and priming sugar, where a small mass error can affect the result.
The conversion is exact only within the precision of the unit factors and your scale. Record the actual weighed amount in the brew log.
Common mistakes
- Confusing weight with volume.
- Rounding a small hop addition too aggressively.
- Using a kitchen scale outside its resolution.
- Forgetting whether a recipe lists pre- or post-processing weight.
Frequently asked questions
How many grams are in an ounce?
The converter uses 28.3495 grams per ounce.
Can weight conversion calculate malt extract points?
No. It converts mass only; extract potential requires ingredient data and a gravity calculation.
Should I weigh priming sugar?
Yes. Weighing gives a more repeatable carbonation addition than measuring by volume.
