How to use this calculator
Enter a volume and choose litres, millilitres, US gallons, US fluid ounces or quarts. Use the result when translating recipe volumes, packaging sizes or equipment capacities between metric and US customary units.
Check whether a source recipe means US gallons or Imperial gallons. This public converter explicitly uses US gallons, so it should not be silently substituted for an Imperial measure.
How the calculation works
The tool converts through litres using fixed unit factors: 1 US gallon is 3.78541 L, 1 US fluid ounce is 0.0295735 L and 1 quart is 0.946353 L. Millilitres are divided or multiplied by 1000.
Example calculation
A 20 L batch converts to approximately 5.284 US gallons. The conversion describes volume only; it does not account for evaporation, trub, shrinkage or packaging loss.
Understanding the result
Volume is stage-dependent in brewing. Pre-boil volume, post-boil volume, fermenter volume and packaged volume are not interchangeable. Always label the stage beside a converted value.
Use this tool for unit translation, then apply your system losses separately when planning a brew.
Common mistakes
- Mixing US and Imperial gallons.
- Using packaged volume as pre-boil volume.
- Ignoring shrinkage after cooling.
- Rounding before scaling a recipe.
Frequently asked questions
Are the gallons US or Imperial?
The public converter uses US gallons and US fluid ounces.
Does conversion include brewing losses?
No. It converts units only; process losses must be modeled separately.
Why do two recipe volumes differ after conversion?
They may refer to different process stages or use different gallon definitions.
